Here about Doctor Who?

Hallo!

If you've arrived at this journal via [info]the_spdn (or other Whommunities) and would like to be added to my friendslist, please comment here. Or if you're already an LJ friend and would like to be part of my Whovians filter, let me know.

Sockpuppets need not apply.

Temporary ETA: I've currently got a bit of a hold on adding new friends due to the advent of Series 4.5 - and the accompanying spoilers. If you enjoy discussing spoilers, that's your prerogative, but unless you can tell me you're consistent about a) not using spoiler icons, and b) keeping all spoilers behind non-descriptive cuts and tags, I'll have to hold off on adding ye 'til after the series finishes. :)

Panic! at the LJ

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Here is a brief guide to methods for backing up your LiveJournal, courtesy of [info]brown_betty, including the ways in which you can retroactively crosspost entries to one of Those Other Journal Sites in an automated fashion.

ETA: For anyone who's interested, here's Wikipedia's breakdown of the different blog sites that use LJ code as their base.

ETA 2: Courtesy of [info]fiona_conn at [info]mrv3000's journal, PaidContent's article indicates that LJ will now be primarily run out of Moscow, hence the SanFran layoffs.

Holy crap, stevia just got approved!

Perhaps because some heavyweights like Coke and Pepsi finally threw their weight behind getting their versions to market.

See [info]byronczimmer's post here for more information.

Interesting article on Salon regarding the current economic crisis

The economic Civil War: The South's attempt to kill the North's auto industry is the latest battle in an ongoing conflict. It's time for a Third Reconstruction to put an end to it.

The CPSIA and You

Wow, I hadn't heard about this one yet. So, basically, if you're someone who works the Ren Faires, sells on Etsy, works the craft festival circuit, etc., and you make something that could be construed as a toy, as far as the government is concerned you're the same as Mattel and you'd better be ready to pay out the wazoo to have your handcarved wooden swords or homemade stuffies put to the same testing as a line of Hot Wheels.

I totally understand they'd rather not have random dangerous substances showing up in kids' toys and clothing, and are trying to avoid creating an international trade fracas by heaven forbid naming China (and Hong Kong, Macau, et al) as points of manufacture from which all toys and clothes must follow these regulations, but gimme a break.

Possibly cool, possibly weird DS game to come

Treasure Troves sounds like it could be interesting... or as my husband put it, roughly analogous to a fishing videogame.

More info on upcoming netbooks

MSI is getting ready to issue a batch of upgraded netbooks following CES 2009 in January, including one that is touchscreen enabled, and models that let you switch your hard drive on and off to improve battery life. In the latter instance, you'd have both an SSD and a HDD, and would just run off the SSD when you didn't need the hard drive. Now that Best Buy has started carrying these (apparently), I'll finally be able to see one in person.

ASUS apparently has some tricks up its sleeve as well. The keyboard on the 1000H, to be honest, felt a little clickety/rickety, and for someone that plans to do a lot of typing, I'd like a better keyboard.

And HP has new batteries coming out for some of its laptops that last 3 times as long and charge up to 80% of capacity in just half an hour. I've pinged their customer service to inquire as to whether the Mini 1000 will be getting this treatment. The HP Mini 1000, in one of its configurations, is now carried in person by Costco. I really liked the keyboard. However, it currently only ships with a 3-cell battery, and to be honest that's just not enough battery life. Hence my query.

Still waiting in the wings for bricks-and-mortar retailers is the Samsung NC-10, which also looks really spiffy... although I'm tempted to wait to have a look at the MSI Wind 110/115/120 (and beyond) series.

Gotta love British ingenuity!

Hey, [info]mrv3000...

Permanent Account Sale

The latest Permanent Account sale starts today; once the sale has started, all existing permanent members will receive a 50-userpic boost to their account, and Scrapbook storage will go from 10GB to 15GB.

Since I've not seen this reported boost, I'm guessing it'll trigger at 9.00 am PST.

PSA: Go check your LJ Notifications Settings

If you've found that LJ has, as though by magic, stopped sending you notifications of comments, you're not the only one. Check your settings here. It appears that either just before or as part of LJ's recent server move, they turned off (everyone's?) notifications for comments they make, and responses to those comments.

It looks like the intent was to change the nature of the notifications, so folks' LJ Inboxes were no longer getting inundated with comments back and forth, but in doing so they turned every aspect of those notifications off, including via email.

More UK-based chains coming to DC... with definite dates and all

In addition to Nando's, which is already open at Gallery Place (across the street from Fado's (yes, next to the Hooters)), we're getting:

Pret a Manger (or just Pret; they're currently rebranding), opening at 1825 Eye St in late January 2009, and Wagamama, opening at the former site of the Olsson's in Penn Quarter (next to the Shakespeare Theatre) in May 2009.

As for the latter, that seems like almost an ideal way to eat light and then hit Coco Sala, if you're not in the mood for Coco's dinner offerings.

Keith Olbermann Rules! (But we already knew that)

Just go read this if you haven't, or didn't get to watch Countdown tonight, m'kay?

Thanks to [info]cheesygirl for pointing it out!
